هذه الدراسة درست الأنظمة الصوتية المختلفة للكنعانية، بعيداً عن أي إيديولوجيا مسبقة، إلا ما هدفت إليه من تأصيل هذه اللغة البائدة في الفصيلة العامة التي تنتمي إليها وهي الفصيلة السامية.
ولذا فقد بدأت الدراسة بتمهيد تحدث عن الكنعانيين حديثاً مختصراً وعن مناطق نفوذهم ولغتهم، ومصادر دراستها التي تمثلت بالنقوش الحية والمصادر التاريخية والمعاجم والدراسات.
وأما الجزء الثاني فقد تحدث عن المستوى الصوتي، فدرس مكوناتها الصامتية، ثم أشباه الحركات والحركات وما يتعلق بها من نشوء الحركات المزدوجة وتطورها، وبعد ذلك أفردت جزءاً خاصاً للحديث عن التغير الاتفاقي التاريخي للأصوات، فذكرت معناه وأشكاله، وأنماط التغير التاريخي في الكنعانية، ثم أتبعت هذا الفصل حديثاً عن بعض الوظائف الصوتية في الكنعانية، مثل إقحام الأصوات وسقوط الأصوات والتشديد والقلب المكاني.
وأما النظام الصرفي لهذه اللغة، فقد درس أبنية الأسماء، وأبنية الأفعال، والمصادر، والمشتقات، والتعريف والتنكير، والبنية العددية، والجنس، ولاحقة النسب، والألفاظ المساعدة، وبعض السوابق واللواحق، ولما لم تفرد الدراسة جزءاً للنحو لأنه بحاجة الى دراسة مفصلة، ولم يكن من هدف هذه الدراسة-فقد قامت الدراسة بدراسة بعض الوظائف التركيبية النحوية للكنعانية، مثل الموصول وأسماء الإشارة وأدوات الشرط والتشبيه، والعليل وحروف العطف والإستدراك وحروف الجر والظروف، وأدوات التوكيد وأدوات النفي والضمائر التي جاءت موسعة، لما لها من ارتباط بالمستوى الصرفي.
وفي سبيل تأصيل هذه اللغة أفرد فصلاً موسعاً عن الدلالات المعجمية المقارنة، تم فيه المقارنة بين عدد كبير من المفردات الكنعانية مع نظائرها الساميات، كالعربية والآرامية والعبرية والأكادية والمنداعية والأثيوبية والعربية الجنوبية وغيرها. ثم أتبع هذا الفصل بحديث عن أسماء الأعلام المفردة والمركبة وأسماء الأماكن، وأدرج معجماً موسعاً للكنعانية (كنعاني عربي) بعد وضع خلاصة الدراسة.
وأما الملحق، فقد جاء في ثلاثة أقسام، الأول منها وضع فيه أكثر من ثلاثين جدولاً للخطوط الكنعانية في مواطنها المختلفة، والثاني جعل فيه بعض الخرائط التي تفيد في توضيح مواطن الكنعانيين ونقوشهم، وأما القسم الثالث فقد خصص لتلك النقوش التي قام بنسخها بخط اليد، وفقاً لصورة الحرف فيها، ثم أنهى هذا الكتاب بثبت للمصادر والمراجع بالعربية واللغات الأجنبية.
