دوافع ثلاثة تلك التي دفعتني إلى دراسة ظاهرة السحر دراسة نظرية عامة، تتضمن في ثناياها حقائق متعلقة في المجتمع المصري، ثم بحثها بحثاً ميدانياً في إطارها الواقعي المصري. أما الدافع الأول، فإعلامي عام، ذلك أنني لاحظت إنتشار هذه الظاهرة حتى بين المتعلمين في مصر، بل إن كبرى الصحف والمجلات المصرية، أصبحت تفرد لهذه الظاهرة اماكن بارزة فيها. والدافع الثاني، تاريخي ثقافي، فدراسة ظاهرة السحر في المجتمع المصري، تلقي الضوء على سمات أخرى من سمات مجتمعنا المصري، وتعد من مكونات الشخصية المصرية. أما الدافع الثالث، فعالمي ثقافي، وهو أن ظاهرة عالمية، وشكل شائع من أشكال الفكر بين الناس، ويمكن أن ينشأ آلياً وبشكل مستقل عن أفكار أخرى مشابهة في بيئات ثقافية أخرى، وذلك بسبب الوحدة النفسية بين البشر. وينقسم البحث الميداني في هذا الكتاب إلى شقين أساسين: الأول خاص بالمشتغلين بالسحر في مدينة القاهرة، ومناطق توزعهم فيها، توزيعهم وفق أعمارهم، ونوعهم وديانتهم، ومستوى تعليمهم، وحالتهم الإجتماعية، إلخ... أما الشق الثاني من البحث فيختص بالمترددين على المشتغلين بالسحر في القاهرة، وتوزعهم فيها، حسب القسم الإداري، وفئات السن، والنوع، والديانة، ومستوى التعليم، والحالة الإجتماعية، ودوافع التردد، وعدد مراته، ومدى شعور المتردد بالفائدة من تردده.
