مقدمة عامة: إن كثيراً من جلائل الأعمال والمؤلفات قد تعرَّضت لتلخيص أو لتبسيط، وراجت بفضل ذلك، ولكن يظل الأصل أصلاً لا غنى عنه. وكانت الصعوبة التي اوجهتُها في الكتاب الذي أقدِّمه لمصر وكنيستها، في أن أُجمل تاريخ عشرات من القرون في بضع عشرات من الصفحات، فجاء كثيرٌ من فقراته تحكي كل منها حقبة زمنية كاملة، ربما يحتاج بعضها إلى كتاب بأكلمه. والرأي عندي أني قد أوجزتُ طول الزَّمن في غير خلل، وألمحتُ إلى مجمل التاريخ في إيضاح. إنني عندما أكتب للقاريء القبطي المبارك عن كنيسته القبطية، وعن موطنها الذي نشأت فيه، أي مصرنا الحبيبة، فلستُ أود من وراء ذلك عرضاً مفصَّلاً للتاريخ، ولا شرحاً مسهباً لطقوس كنسيَّة، إذ احتلت الطقوس القبطية الجانب الأوفر من السِّلسلتين الثالثة والرابعة من هذه الدراسات. ولكنني أبغي من هذا الكتاب، أن يتعرَّف القاريء القبطي على الوطن الذي يعيش فيه بالقدر الذي يجعله واعياً لما يدور حوله اليوم من أحداث، والتي هي نتاج محصِّله حتمية لثوابت ترسَّخت عبر قرون طويلة. ويتعرف أيضاً على كنيسته القبطية التي نشأت في هذا الوطن، وعبرت مسيرة حياتها بين كثير من الأجناس والشعوب التي تألبت على مصر واحداً بعد الآخر. ولكن ظلت مصرية مصر أقوى من أن يمسها أذى، وبقيت كنيسة مصر الوطنية منارة بين كنائس المسكونة. هذا الكتاب الذي بين يديك، أردت أن أجمع تاريخ مصر وكنيستها في صفحات قليلة، ربما لا تغني عن دراسات مستفيضة متخصِّصة، ولكنها صفحات تركز الضوء على حياة أمة منذ نشأتها حتى يومنا الحاضر في رؤية خاطفة تعرض الصور في لقطة واحدة أو لقطتين، ليتبيَّن لنا ما آل إليه حاضرنا الذي هو أحدث صورة لماضينا، والذي هو بالتأكيد أساس لمستقبلنا. وعندما تتبلور الفكرة الإجمالية عن كنيستنا التي تسعى لأن تكمِّل جهادها في غربة هذا العالم، يكون الحُكم على الأحداث الحاضرة حكماً قد استوعب إلى حد مُرضي دروس الماضي وعِبَر التاريخ. وجدير بالذكر هنا أن هذا الكتاب الذي جاز في عُجالة على تاريخ مصر وكنيستها يكمِّله كتاب آخر بعنوان "الكنيسة - مبناها ومعناها". فهذان الكتابان معاً عن كنيسة مصر (944 صفحة من القطع المتوسط) يضاهيان ثلاثة كتب أخرى من نفس هذه السلسلة الثانية عن باقي الكنائس الشرقية الأخرى وأوطانها (896 صفحة من القطع المتوسط) وهي حوالي عشرون كنيسة.
