شهد القرن السابع الميلادي أحداثاً سياسية ودينية هامة غيرت وجه هذه المنطقة. فبعد إذ كانت المسيحية عرضة للاضطهاد في المنطقة البيزنطية، ثم في المنطقة الفارسية، وفي مجابهة مستمرة مع الوثنية بمختلف مظاهرها ومذاهبها، وجدت ذاتها على حين غرة أمام ديانة أخرى تبنتها أقوام في الجزيرة العربية، وسرعان ما انتشرت بين سائر القبائل العربية، وامتدت إلى أقوام أخرى وإلى مختلف البلدان في الشرق والغرب. فكان على المسيحية أن تأخذ موقفاً صريحاً من هذا الدين الجديد الذي ينادي بوحدانية الله الخالق وبالقيم الروحية الأساسية، ويقاوم الأصنام ونفوذها، ويكافح الوثنية،ويحاول اجتثاث جذورها المتأصلة في البلاد العربية وفي بلاد المشرق.
والكتاب الذي بين يدينا يسعى لتسليط الأضواء على العلاقات المسيحية بالإسلام التي سادت الفترة الممتدة من نجيء الإسلام إلى نهاية العهد العباسي في بغداد في منتصف القرن الثالث عشر، وأيضاً تسليط الأضواء على الطابع الأموي الذي يجب أن يهيمن على علاقات المسيحيين بالمسلمين في الوطن الواحد الذي فيه يعيشون.
