إن من الصعب – إن لم يكن من المستحيل – فهم التراث اللغوي العربي بدون الاستعانة بالمفاهيم التى يقدمها علم النفس الإدراكى . يعرض الكتاب هذه الفكرة إطار نقاشه لفضية خلافية شط حولها الجدل منذ أربعينيات القرن الماضي بعد أن بدأت البعثات المصرية تدرس (علم اللغة ) في الجامعات الغربية. هذه القضية الخلافية هي: هل صدر النحو العربي القديم عن نظرية؟ وهل كان النحو العربي القديم عن نظرية ؟ وهل كان للنحاة القدماء منهج فى درس العربية؟ يكشف البحث أن قطاع الدراسات الغوية فى حقل الثقافة العربية ما زال عاجزا عن إدراك ماهية المنهج الذي استخدامه قدماء النحاة فى درسهم اللغوي،ولا ماهية النظرية اللغوية التى قادت ذلك الدرس،ويوضح أساس إلى أن المشكلة لا تقع أصلا فى نظام (علم اللغة )وإنما فى نطاق (علم النفس الإدراكى ) يبين البحث كيف يستطيع علم النفس الإدراكي ان يساعدنا، أخيرا ، فى التعرف على هذا المنهج وهذه النظرية.
