يسلّط الباحث الضوء على مسألتين اثنتين، من مسائل كثيرة، تناولها أبو خلدون ساطع الحصري، في كتاباته الغنية بالمواقف والنظريات، وعلى رأسها التأسيس للفكر القومي العربي. أما المسألتان فهما: الدين، والعلمانية.
فالحصري، إذ يمّيز بين الدين القومي والدين الأممي، يرى في الثاني العالمية والانفتاح، والميل إلى إيجاد رابطة أعم من روابط اللغة والتاريخ، كما يميل أتباع الدين الأممي كثيراً إلى معارضة القوميات، وفي هذا السياق يذكر المسيحية والإسلام. ويعتقد الحصري أن الأديان الأممية والعالمية لم تستطع أن توحّد القوميات، حتى عندما بلغت الذروة في سلطتها. ويذهب إلى عقد الصلة القوية بين الدين واللغة، وعلى هذا فاللغة العربية انتشرت كثيراً بواسطة الإسلام. لكن يبقى تأثير الدين في اللغة متغيّراً. جملة من التساؤلات التي تثير نقاشاً في هذا الخصوص، ولعلّ أبرزها ما كان يؤكده الحصري القومي أن الحضارة العربية كانت قومية، ولادينية، في آن معاً.
أما العلمانية في نهجه وكتاباته ومواقفه فقد كانت صريحة إلى أبعد الحدود، وهي برأي الباحث نابعة من الظروف التي كانت سائدة في الدولة العثمانية أولاً، والتي تعززت وتطورت بعد رحيله إلى الوطن العربي. لذا، يتفق الحصري في علمانيته مع طه حسين، رغم انتقاداته له، فهو يتفق معه بشأن الفصل بين السياسة والدين، فـ «السياسة شيء والدين شيء آخر»، و«لا يمكن إقامة السياسة على الدين، بصورة من الصور».
وينسجم مع هذا ما ذهب إليه الحصري من فصل مطلق بين العلم والدين، مؤكداً أن هذا الفصل لا يفضي بصورة حتمية إلى اللادينية أو إنكار الدين أو التنصل منه، فلكلٍّ ميدانه ودوره. وبالنظر إلى نشدانه العلمانية فقد أكد أن الحضارة العربية لم تكن دينية، بل مدنية (علمانية). فهل هذا دعوة صريحة للعرب المسيحيين إلى الانخراط في العمل من أجل الإسهام في حضارة المستقبل، كما أسهموا في قيام الحضارة قبل الإسلام، وبعده؟
