هي مذكرات رجل عُماني من زنجبار، عايش زنجبار في أزهى عصورها، وفي لحظاتها السوداء أيضاً، كان مثالاً على التفاني في خدمة وطنه بحكم تدرجه في مناصب حكومية عدة، ومصاهرته للسلطان خليفة بن حارب البوسعيدي، ما مكنه من تدوين أشياء بالغة الأهمية عن واقع بلاده والتاريخ بفكر منفتح وذاكرة خصبة.
ولأن خير رواية هي ما يرويها صاحبها قدّم المؤلف لكتابه بمقدمة يقول فيها: " ... يبدأ الكتاب بحادث الثورة – ثورة زنجبار عام 1964م – ثم يفتح نافذة إلى الوراء ليطل عام 1914م، حيث ولدت في شواطىء زنجبار الوادعة. كان العالم الحديث حينئذ قد ولد للتو، وكان على وشك اختبار قدراته التكنولوجية حديثة الإكتشاف في الحرب العالمية الأولى، وتشبه قصة حياتي في كثير من النواحي للتحولات التي حدثت في القرن العشرين. لذا فقد سعيت لدمج ما هو شخصي في السياق الأوسع للتاريخ (...). وفي منتصف الكتاب تقريباً، نعود إلى عام 1964م للحديث عن الثورة الزنجبارية مجدداً، حيث تتواصل أحداث التاريخ عبر عدة محطات مضطربة تمتد لعدة سنوات، إلى حين تولي صاحب الجلالة السلطان قابوس بن سعيد المعظم – حفظه الله ورعاه – مقاليد الحكم في عُمان عام 1970م. لقد كانت لحظة حاسمة تبشر بميلاد عصر جديد من التغيير، يسهم في بناء وطن حقيقي لآلاف العُمانيين الذين شردتهم الثورة (...) إن أؤلئك الذين يحبون زنجبار لم يفقدوها إلى الأبد، ويتجلى ذلك في النهاية السعيدة لهذا الكتاب (...). إن هذا الكتاب ليس مجرد سردٍ لأحداث حياتي وتفاصيلها، بل هو انعكاس لتجليات التجربة الحياتية لشخصٍ ما، والقيم التي يمكن أن يستشفها من هذه القصة ...".
وبناءً على ما تقدم تم للمؤلف تقسيم السيرة إلى مقدمة وسبعة عشرة فصلاً تمثل المراحل التي مر بها المؤلف في حياته من الناحية الشخصية والإجتماعية والسياسية بالإضافة إلى ذكريات المؤلف في زنجبار، وتنجانيقا (تنزانيا حالياً) وكينيا وأوغندا، ومدغشقر، ومصر، وليبيا، وسلطنة عُمان.
