قام الألمان فى القرن التاسع عشر بتوسيع دائرة الاهتمام بالتراث الشعبى ودراساته، وقضاياه المختلفة، وما زال الألمان يواصلون نشاطهم، ويوسعون دائرة علمهم فى جمع التراث الشعبى من مختلف بلدان العالم. وكان للتراث العربى نصيب وافر من نشاط الألمان، فما تزال الحكايات الشعبية تحتل مكان الصدارة فى اهتماماتهم التى شملت كل شئ على يد أجيال متلاحقة من الباحثين والمهتمين، حتى اليوم. ولذا وجب علينا أن ننقل إلى القارئ العربى بعض هذا التراث الشعبى ممثلا فى الأساطير والحكايات التى دونها الأخوان جريم من أفواه الرواة، وقد سعى كلا الباحثين أن تكون الأقاصيص الشعبية المكتوبة الموروثة مأخوذة من المصدر الأول، ثم كتباها بأسلوب أدبى رشيق دون أن تفقد روحها الشعبية الأصيلة، وقد يكون لبعضها صلة واضحة بقصص (ألف ليلة وليلة) وهناك تأثر بمناخ حكايات (كليلة ودمنة). وكتاب الأساطير الذى بين أيدينا يحتوى على مئة وسبع عشرة أسطورة، قسمت إلى إحدى وستين أسطورة محلية (الحكايات التى ترتبط بمكان محدد)، وست وخمسين أسطورة تاريخية (حكايات عن وقائع تاريخية) قامت الذاكرة الجماعية للشعوب بحفظها، وقام الأخوان جريم بجمعها وتدوينها.
