ثمة هدفان أساسيان لهذا الكتاب، الهدف الأول هو تسليط الأضواء على الخصائص المميزة للعهد الملكي في العراق والتي طالما تعرضت للتحريف والهجمات الظالمة، وتحليل تلك الخصائص بأسلوب موضوعي خالٍ من التحيز، ولمناقشة المعتقدات الخاطئة التي سادت لعدة عقود واقتنع بها جيلنا والجيل الذي سبقنا بكونها حقائق ثابتة لا تقبل الشك أو النقاش. إضافة إلى ذلك محاولة تصحيح الصورة النمطية السلبية، أو بالأحرى المنحطة، التي خلقتها الدعايات المغرضة عن ذلك العهد الذي دام من عام 1921 إلى 1958 وحقق العراق أثناءه تطورات جوهرية كبرى في معظم نواحي الحياة. أما الهدف الثاني فهو تحذير أبنائنا من الأجيال الجديدة من العراقيين وتجنيبهم الأخطاء التي ارتكبها جيلنا والجيل الذي سبقنا بالإنجرار وراء الشعارات البراقة الفارغة وعدم تقديرنا للإنجازات التي حققها قادة ذلك العهد بحكمتهم وواقعيتهم وخلقهم ونزاهتهم وخططهم المحكمة والتي أدت إلى خلق كيان العراق، ومن ثم تطويره بعد ثلاثة عقود فقط ليسير بخطوات مدروسة وثابتة نحو التقدم وتعزيز مقومات الدولة الحديثة وتماسك مكوناتها السكانية الأثنية والدينية وإمتزاجهم.
