لا شك في أن التحليل الإحصائي يبدو على درجة كبيرة من الأهمية بين المشتغلين بالعلوم الاجتماعية لاعتبارات عديدة. أولى هذه الاعتبارات أن فهم كثير من الظواهر الاجتماعية ومدى شيوعها وعموميتها يتوقف على الإلمام بمبادئ التحليل الإحصائي. وثانية هذه الاعتبارات أن هناك فروعا عديدة من علم الاجتماع ارتبط تقدمها المنهجي باستخدام أساليب التحليل الإحصائي وتطويرها. ومن أبرز هذه الفروع علم السكان وعلم الاجتماع الأسرى. وآخر هذه الاعتبارات أن التحليل الإحصائي تظهر ضرورته في كافة مراحل البحث الاجتماعي ابتداءً بتحديد المشكلة وانتهاءً بتفسير النتائج. ويهدف هذا المقرر إلى تحقيق ما يأتي: 1. بما أن الإحصاء جزء مهم من أجزاء عملية إجراء البحوث العلمية، فإن التدريب على التحليل الإحصائي يعد عنصراً هاماً من عناصر تعليم طلاب أقسام علم الاجتماع. 2. الأساليب الإحصائية وسيلة مفيدة للغاية في زيادة معرفتنا بالعالم الاجتماعي مع ضرورة التأكيد - مع ذلك - على أن هذه الأساليب ليست هدفاً في حد ذاته. 3. أن فهم تراث علم الاجتماع يعتمد على الإلمام بالأساليب الإحصائية الأساسية. وبناءً على ما سبق حاولت في الفصول التي يضمها هذا الكتاب أن أقدم لطلاب أقسام علم الاجتماع أسس التحليل الإحصائي بطريقة تساعد الطالب على أن يدرك جدوى هذا التحليل في فهم الظواهر الاجتماعية.
