الهدف الرئيسي من تأليف هذا الكتاب هو مساعدة طلبة كلية التربية وغيرها في الاعتماد على أنفسهم في الدراسة والبحث، وكذلك مساعدة المعلمين القائمين على العمل في مجال التربية والتعليم من حيث تقديم وسيلة تيسر عملية التعليم والتعلم وبالتالي تطوير عملهم.
ولقد تناول الكتاب في مجمله الإحصاء كعلم له أهمية خاصة في مجال العلوم التربوية والاجتماعية ثم التعريف بالطريقة العملية والطريقة الإحصائية وأنواع البحوث وكيفية تصميمها وهذا ما شمله الفصل الأول من الكتاب.
في الفصل الثاني يتعرض الكتاب بالدراسة لأنواع وأدوات البحث من استفتاء ومقابلة واختبارات وكيفية تصميم الاستمارة الإحصائية.
أما الفصل الثالث فيتناول كيفية تصنيف البيانات الإحصائية وتبويبها وكيفية جدولة البيانات الإحصائية من توزيعات تكرارية وجداول تكرارية.
ويتم في الفصل الرابع عرض البيانات الإحصائية من خلال الرسوم البيانية لمجموعة من الأشكال للتوزيعات التكرارية مثل المدرج التكراري والمنحنى التكراري والمضلع التكراري والمنحنى المتجمع الصاعد أو الهابط (النازل).
ويناقش الفصل الخامس مفهوم العينات وطرق اختيارها وأسلوب العينات في جمع البيانات ومن ثم دراسة أنواع العينات (الاحتمالية وغير الاحتمالية).
ويعرض الفصل السادس بأسلوب مبسط مقاييس النزعة المركزية وخواصها مثل الوسط الحسابي والوسيط والمنوال وكذلك الوسط الهندسي والوسط التوافقي.
ويشرح الفصل السابع مقاييس التشتت مثل المدى المطلق وتصف المدى الربيعي والمنثنيات والرباعيات والإعشاريات و التطبيق عليها.
ويتعرض الفصل الثامن لمفهوم الارتباط والانحدار ومن ثم دراسة معاملات ارتباط كل من بيرسون وسبيرمان ثم معادلة الانحدار البسيطة ومعامل الارتباط الجزئي.
ويناقش الفصل التاسع مفهوم الدلالة الإحصائية واختباراتها مثل اختبارات ومربع كاي والأرقام القياسية وكذلك السلاسل الزمنية.
أما الفصل العاشر وهو الفصل الأخير فيتعرض للإحصاءات الحيوية ومقاييسها من مثل تعداد السكان والتسجيل والولادة والوفيات والزواج والطلاق ومعدلاتها.
