يقدم هذا الكتاب بحثاً معمقاً في الأسس النظرية للمنهج السيميائي في التحليل النقدي وذلك في إطار تطبيق منهج التحليل السيميائي على أحد أهم مجالات الإبداع الإنساني ألا وهو المسرح. يعرف الكتاب مصطلح السيمياء ويظهر التسميات والمدارس المختلفة لهذا المنهج كما ويبين الآراء المختلفة حول هذا المنهج وخاصة عدم اتفاق الباحث مه رأي رولان بارت الذي يعتبر السيمياء جزءاً من اللسانيات حيث يؤيد البحث وجهة النظر القائلة بأن السيميائية تدرس الأنساق الثقافية اللغوية وغير اللغوية.
جاء الفصل الثاني بعنوان سيميائية العنوان وقد قسم إلى جانب نظري اهتم بتحديد استراتيجية سيميائية لقراءة العنوان وقسم عملي تم فيه التطبيق على عدد من النصوص المسرحية.
تناول الفصل الثالث من الكتاب موضوع سيميائيات الشخصية وتم فيه التركيز على محاور الشخصية الدرامية وسميائية الغسم وسيميائية الجسد وسيميائية القوى الفاعلة وتم فيه معالجة شخصية (الشيخ) في المسرح كمثال عن التحليل السيميائي للشخصية الدرامية.
في الفصل الرابع والأخير من الكتاب تركز البحث على التحليل السيميائي للمكان وتم إبراز تحولات المكان بالنسبة للشخصية وجماليات المكان ودوره الدرامي.
