أشعب هو أبو العلاء، وقيل: أبو القاسم، المعروف بأشعب الطمّاع، ويقال له ابن أم حميده، وابن أم الخلندج، لم يعرف عن اصله شيئاً، إلا أنه شخصية طريفة من أهل المدينة، عاش في العصر الأموي، وكان من موالي عبد الله بن الزبير، ومن المعروف عنه أنه كان كوسجاً، أزرق، احول العينين، أقرع، ألثع، يجعل الراء واللام ياءً، وهذه الصفات جعلت منه مهرجا هازلاً للعامة والخاصة، أضف إلى ذلك انه كان حسن الصوت بالقرآن، وأحسن الناس في أداءه لغناء كان قد سمعه، تكسب أشعب بغنائه وسرعة بداهته، فكان ينتقل في حواضر الحجاز والعراق، باثاً نكاته في كل مكان قصده، وكان البعض يعبث به، ولعل أغربها ما حصل له مع سكينة التي أجبرته على احتضان كمية من البيض حتى فقست جميعها، هذه الشخصية النادرة دفعت "أكرم مطر" إلى وضع هذا الكتاب الذي يضم بين طياته اجمل ما وقع عليه من طرائف أشعب ونوادره، وغايته إلى جانب الترويج عن النفس والإمتاع والمؤانسة، تعريف القارئ على أهم الصفات العقلية والنفسية والفكاهية التي تميز بها أشعب الشخصية النادرة بنوادرها ونكتها وفكاهتها. لا يخلو أي تجمع إنساني من ذلك الشخص الطريف الذي وهبه الله البديهة والحساسية النقدية المرهفة، التي تجعله يلتقط أحداث الحياة وأحوالها العادية فتتحول على يديه إلى ضحك. وتاريخنا العربي، حافل بهذه الشخصيات المرحة الطريفة التي أبدعت ونسج الناس حولها الكثير من الطرائف والنوارد، المفعمة بروح النقد الاجتماعية والخلقي والأدبي والسياسي.
