حين نقرأ كتاباً في المنطق الرمزي نجده يتناول نظريات رئيسة أربعة: حساب القضايا، وحساب المحمول، وحساب الأصناف، وحساب العلاقات، ويعرض موضوع كل نظرية وعناصرها ومصطلحها الرمزي وقوانينها، لكنه لا يذكر صاحب هذه النظرية أو تلك أو صاحب هذه الفكرة أو تلك من أفار تلك النظريات، ليس كتابنا كتاباً في المنطق الرمزي بالمفهوم السابق، وإنما موضوعه دراسة تاريخية تتبع تلك النظريات الأربعة نشأة وتطوراً وتربطها بأعلامها؛ حينئذ يمكن لقارئ أي كتاب في المنطق الرمزي أن يرد كل فكرة من أفكاره الأساسية إلى مصادرها.
قسمنا كتابنا أبواباً أربعة، تمثل حلقات أربعة في نشأة المنطق الرمزي وتطوره، كن مبدؤنا الموجه في التمييز بين تلك الحلقات هو مدى تحقيق خصائص ذلك المنطق -كما نعرفه اليوم- وهي استخدامه الرموز، وانه نسق استنباطي، ومقدار النظريات المقدمة في كل حلقة، وترتبط نشأة المنطق الرمزي وتطوره ارتباطاً وثيقاً يموضوعين حاولنا تفادي البحث المفصل فيهما: المنطق التقليدي، وفلسفة الرياضيات، أما المنطق التقليدي فهو الصفحة الأولى من صفحات المنطق الصوري، بينما المنطق الرمزي ثاني صفحاته، وأما فلسفة الرياضيات فموضوع نشأ وتطور مع نشأة المنطق الرمزي وتطوره، وهو مبحث في طبيعة العلوم الرياضية ومناهجها ومعيار صحة نظرياتها، وهو أيضاً مبحث في رد التصورات الرياضية الأساسية إلى تصورات منطقية بحتة أو ردها جميعها إلى تصورات أكثر منها سبقاً.
