إن كتاب غيردا ليرنر كتاب تفكيكي وتأسيسي في آن، فهو يفكك آليات السيطرة على النساء وإخضاعهن، التي صُنّعت منذ بدايات الحضارات الأولى المعروفة في الشرق الأدنى القديم، منذ أن بدأ الإنسان في تدجين الحيوانات والسيطرة على الطبيعة، وهو تأسيسي لأنه من الكتب الأولى في مجاله، التي تحلّل بعمق واستبصار وإحاطة النظام الأبويّ وتأصله في الأسطورة والدين والتاريخ المدوّن، جاعلاً من نفسه كتاباً نسوياً رائداً بامتياز، يعكس تمكّن المرأة وقدرتها على نقد وتفكيك الخطاب المتمركز ذكرياً. فالكتاب مؤلف من قبل امرأة، مما يلقي ضوءاً على دور النساء في العمل على تحرير أنفسهن من سيطرة النظام الأبوي الذي دفع بهن إلى مرتبة متدنّية وأخضعهن لسيطرة الرجل الذي صار الآمر الناهي فيما يتعلق بحياتهن. هذا الرجل الذي تعلم السيطرة على المرأة في البداية من تدجينه للحيوانات، كما تذهب المؤلفة.
تجدر الإشارة إن كتاب نشأة النظام الأبوي، حاصل على جائزة جون كيلي سنة 1968، التي تمنحها الجمعية التاريخية الأميركية، ويُعد إنجازاً ضخماً في حقل دراسات المرأة.
