إستغرق الأخوان جريم في تجميع هذه الحواديت في ألمانيا أكثر من نصف القرن، من سنة 1806 إلى 1857. كان الأخوان يدونان ما يرويه الشيوخ والعجائز من النساء وسكان القرى النائية في كل أطراف ألمانيا من حكايات وحواديت، لا يضيفان شئ قط، ولا يحوران ما يسجلان. وكانت كل طبعة حديثة للحواديت تضم الجديد منها، وتتم مراجعة القديم ومقارنته بما يقصه الناس في كل ربوع ألمانيا. وكان الرواة يقصون الحدوتة الواحدة بعدة طرق، وتختلف هذه الطرق إلى أن الحدوتة الواحدة تبدو في النهاية عدة حواديت. وإذا حار الأخوان جريم في التعرف على الأصل منها، تخيرا الأفضل والأنقى والأبسط لكتاب الحواديت الأصلي، ثم حفظا البقية المتكررة في الجزء الثالث. وتبدو متكررات الحواديت في بعض الأحيان وكأنها حواديت مستقلة؛ لذلك انتخبنا للترجمة العربية الطبعة الألمانية الكاملة للحواديت، ليطلع عليها القارئ العربي للمرة الأولى غير ناقصة. ولم تتم الترجمة وفقاً لتسلسل الحواديت لدى الأخوين جريم. ورأيت أن يضم هذا الجزء أطول وأشهر وأجمل الحواديت الألمانية، وهي ثماني وثلاثون حدوتة. أما حواديت الأخوين جريم فتبلغ مائتي حدوتة، هي الأصل، ثم عشر حواديت أخرى تحت عنوان "حكايات الخرافات للأطفال"، وثماني وعشرين حدوتة نشرت في فصل بذاته بعنوان "الملحق". وأخيراً مكررات الحواديت في مجلد مستقل يضم مائتين واثنين وأربعين حدوتة.
