حينما يُذكر اسم الأخوين غريم، تتبادر إلى الذاكرة، مجموعة «حكايات الأطفال والبيت» التي تُعد منذ قرابة قرنين من الزمن، مصدراً مهماً من مصادر متعة الصغار والكبار على حدٍ سواء، ليس في المنطقة الجغرافية الناطقة بالألمانية فحسب، بل في معظم بقاع العالم، عبر العديد من الترجمات والإصدارات المتعاقبة، بما فيها ترجمات متفرقة إلى العربية. إنّ معظم هذه الحكايات يحمل طابعاً تعليمياً أخلاقيّاً، يُمرِّر موعظته عبر المبالغة في تصوير الشخوص والحوادث والأفعال. إنها تتمحور حول قطبي الخير والشر اللذين يهيمنان على حياة الإنسان ويُسيّران مصيره منذ الولادة وحتى الموت. والحكايات على الرغم من توجهها إلى الأطفال، لا تستهين بالشر أو تستخف به، بل إنها تصوره جبّاراً بشعاً عاتياً وقوياً، لكن الخير إذا ما واجهه بجرأةٍ وذكاءٍ وتعاون فإنه قادر على تحقيق النصر، وغالباً ما تتدخل الطبيعة في لحظة لتُحقِّق النصر، ولتوقع بأطراف الشر عقوباتٍ فظيعةٍ ومروعة، من حيث وقعها على خيال المستمع أو القارئ. وتفسير هذه المبالغة الشديدة في تصوير عقوبة الشرـ سواء كان إنساناً أم حيواناً ـ أنها تقوم بدور الترهيب والردع عن الإقدام على فعل الشر، في حين تبدو أطراف الخير المنتصرة وهي ترفل بعد عناء في أثواب السعادة والهناء.
