إن الخليل بن أحمد(ت 175هـ) سئل عن علل النحو وأصوله من أين أتى بها، هل إخترعها من عنده؟ أم أخذها عن العرب أبناء اللغة؟ فقال الخليل: إن مثلي ومثل اللغة العربية كمثل رجل دخل دارا محكمة البناء عجيبة النظام والأقسام، فكلما وقف هذا الرجل في الدار على شئ أعجبه قال إنما فعل باني الدار هذا لعله كذا وكذا ولسبب كذا وكذا، فجائز أن يكون قد فعل ذلك لعلة أخرى، فإن أتيح لغيري علة لما عللته من النحو هي أليق مما ذكرته فليأت بها. وهذا كلام مستقيم وإنصاف من الخليل، كما يقول الزجاجي.
ومن العجيب حقا أن بعض الناس مازال يرى أن في دراسة العربية، بطرق ومناهج لم يعرفها القدماء، عدوانا عليها ومحاولة لهدمها ويصمون أصحاب هذه الدعوة لتجديد درس العربية وتدريها بالتغريب والتنكر للتراث، وهي نغمة كانت قد شاعت وذاعت في بداية معرفة الحياة العلمية والجامعية في العالم العربي بعلم اللغة مع نهاية النصف الأول من هذا القرن، ثم خفتت مع إستقرار هذا العلم في الجامعات العربية، ولكنها عادت تتردد في الأونة الأخيرة بصورة لافته للنظر وأغلب الظن أنها آتيه من هؤلاء الذين يكتفون بالحفظ والإجترار.
ومن هنا تأتي أهمية هذه المقدمة في دراسة اللغة لأنها في ظني تنطلق من التراث إلى المعاصرة.
