نبذة النيل والفرات: إن أبرز ما لفت نظر المحدثين والمعاصرين في المعاجم العربية هو المآخذ والعيوب التي أخذت تتردد في كل دراسة حول المعاجم العربية حتى أصبحت من المعالم الثابتة في كل دراسة ونسوا أن هذه المعاجم قد مضى على تأليف بعضها أكثر من عشرة قرون، ومع ذلك، لم يحاول أحد أن يعرف هذه المعاجم في ضوء الظروف والملابسات الحضارية التي وضعت فيها، أو بعبارة أخرى، لم يحاول أحد دراسة هذه المعاجم، في ذاتها ومن أجل ذاتها دراسة تكشف عنها، لا عن عيوبها فحسب. وهذا الكتاب هو محاولة في هذا السبيل للكشف عن القيمة اللغوية والمعجمية التي جاءت مع هذه الثروة من المعاجم في تنوعها وغزارة مادتها، وطرق جمعها ووضعها وقد يرى القارئ نقداً لها هنا وهناك في صفحات هذا الكتاب ولكنه نقد للكشف عن وجهة النظر الأخرى، وبشكل عام يتوجه هذا الكتاب إلى الطلاب والباحثين والدارسين لعلم المعاجم بشقيه النظري والتطبيقي، ولكي يكشف المؤلف للقارئ عن قيمة هذا التراث المعجمي، بدأ كتابه بتعريف علم المعاجم وفن صناعة المعجم، كما جاء في كتابات ودراسات علماء اللغة والمعاجم المعاصرين من العرب وغير العرب، حتى يتمكن القارئ من الحكم على هذا التراث المعجمي حكماً موضوعياً في ضوء نتائج العلم المعاصر وأحكامه، وكان ذلك في الباب الأول من هذا الكتاب. أما في الباب الثاني فبين البدايات الأولى للمادة اللغوية التي تكوّن منها المعجم العربي كيف نشأت هذه المادة، وكيف تطورت، متى انتهت بوضع أول معجم في تاريخ اللغة العربية وهو معجم "العين" الذي قلده وتَبِعَهُ عدد من المعجمين القدماء فتكونت أول مدرسة معجمية من حيث الجمع والوضع. أما الباب الثالث: فقد تناول فيه المدرسة الثانية من مدارس المعجمية العربية التراثية، وذلك من خلال معاجم ثلاثة هي: الجمهرة، والمجمل، والمقاييس. لكي ينتقل بعد ذلك في الباب الرابع إلى مدرسة التقفية من خلال ثلاثة معاجم أيضاً هي: الصحاح، ولسان العرب، والقاموس المحيط.
