إن علم اللغة البنيوى بدأ على يد دى سوسير وصفيا يقوم على جمع قدر كبير من الملاحظات حول البنية اللغوية وتصنيف عناصرها، واستخلاص ما يترتب على ذلك من نتائج دون أن يتجاوز هذه المرحلة إلى عملية التفسير التى رأى تشومسكى أنها تمثل أهم أهداف النظرية اللغوية. وإذا كانت البنية وتحليلها هى هدف علم اللغة البنيوى فقد كانت أيضاً هدف النحاة وعلماء اللغة فى التراث العربى، بحيث رأى بعض الباحثين عناصر بنيوية واضحة فى كتاب سيبويه. فقد ميز نحاة العربية الأوائل مثل الخليل وسيبويه بين مستويين من مستويات الدراسة النحوية. أما المستوى الأول فيتمثل فى رصد وتتبع الخطأ فى الأداء. أما المستوى الثانى فيتمثل فى علاقة المبنى بالمعنى. ولم يكن المستوى الأول إلا تلك القواعد المجردة التى يغلب عليها الطابع التعليمى، والتى استند فيها النحاة إلى استعمالات العرب. فى حين كان المستوى الثانى يتمثل فى العلاقات التركيبية المختلفة بين الكلمات داخل الجملة أو بين الجمل وبعضها. أى أن النحاة قد أدركوا أن هناك ارتباطاً واضحاً بين المبنى والمعنى. والمبنى عندهم كان يبدأ من أصغر وحداته، كما تتمثل فى الصوت أو الحرف. بينما تمثل الجملة أكبر هذه الوحدات. أى أن أهم خصيصة من خصائص التحليل البنيوى كانت فى أذهانهم، وهى ثنائية التركيب اللغوى.
