تدور أحداث الرواية في مدينة بورخاست الرومانية بطلتها تدعى صفية مسلمة عائدة من دمشق إلى بلدها الأم بعد ان هداها الله إلى الإسلام لتحاول نشره وإنقاذ ابنتها ووالدتها من الضلال. تتحدث الرواية عن صراع الإيمان والكفر والحق والباطل وما يعانيه المسلمون في الغرب من مشكلات متنوعة. كما تحكي عن الدعوة هناك وتسلط الضوء على قضايا متعددة. تستخدم الشتاء والثلج تحديداً رمزا للأزمة التي تعاني منها البطلة في كفاحها لتنتهي بذوبان الثلج وظهور براعم الربيع التي ترسم الأمل لغد مشرق وانبثاق لفجر الإسلام في القلوب.
