"الشتاء المرير" عمل روائي ناقد للأديبة "آسيا (خولة) عبد الهادي" نسجت خيزطها من واقع الحياة، تعكس تفاصيل حياة أبطالها صوراً متعددة لتركيبات إنسانية أفرزتها –تركيبة اجتماعية- دينية- جامدة، تعبر بها الروائية عن بني ذهنية ما زالت مقيدة بثقافة جاهزة سلفاً رغم التطور الذي واكب الحياة البشرية. تقول الروائية: "الشتاء المرير... رواية تحمل آلاماً حقيقية بكل تفاصيلها ربما يتصورها البعض بعيدة عن الواقع وفيها مبالغة ولكن... كل ما جاء في هذه الرواية من أحاديث وحوارات وأحداث في حقيقتها واقعية مائة بالمائة ولكنها نتاج مجموعة من القصص ومجموعة من البطلات.. فرجاء "أي البطلة" العالمة هي غيرها الكاتبة وهي غيرها صبية الشاعر وهي غيرها زوجة الطبيب وهي غيرها ابنة المفاضل وهي غيرها التي عاشت في لندن وهي غيرها التي وجدت نفسها أمام وصية زوجها وهي غيرها التي تبرعت بقسم من مستشفى باسم زوجها.. وقد عملت على صهر هذه الشخصيات أو "الرجاءات" جميعها في بوتقة واحدة بعد أن تأكد لي أن الجميع أو على الأقل الاغلبية تشترك بنفس الآلام والأوجاع... وهدفي أن أضع المجتمع أمام نفسه لملاحظة ما يقترفه بحق أفراده من أخطاء...". من ناحية أخرى، تهدف الروائية من وراء عملها هذا إلى إعطاء صورة محترمة للمرأة العربية التي أنهكتها الكتابات الكثيرة التي حطت من شأنها وصورتها امرأة ترتمي في أحضان الرذيلة والخيانة والهوى، فالمرأة العربية برأي الكاتبة لن تكون في يوم من الأيام على هذه الصورة فهي "التي أنجبت الأنبياء والشهداء والصديقين والعلماء والأدباء...". "الشتاء المرير" هي أكثر من رواية، هي بوح أدبي عميق يرتقي بالمرأة العربية إلى المستوى الذي خلقها الله من أجله، فهي شريكة الرجل والحياة لا تستقيم من دونها.
