لا يختلف إثنان أن الشاعر محمود درويش من أميز الأدباء العرب الذين قدموا مشروعاً إبداعياً شاملاً ومغايراً للسائد والمألوف والنمطي، وأول ما يميّز أعماله شعرية العنوان، حتى عندما تكون المادة المكتوبة لا تنتمي إلى حقل الشعر، وهكذا فعل في (شيء عن الوطن) ففيه قدم الشاعر آليات صياغية جديدة في مقاربة قضية بلاده (فلسطين) وتسجيل موقف مما يجري من اضطهاد للإنسان الفلسطيني داخل حدود أرضه "... لم يشهد تاريخ اضطهادنا الطويل مثل ما يشهده الآن، من عنف وفظاظة في ملاحقة أبناء هذا الوطن كلهم متهمون ... كلهم مهددون ... وكلهم مضطهدون ...". أما عن موضوع التعايش بين العرب واليهود فيقول درويش: "... إننا نؤمن بإمكانية أن يعيش العرب واليهود معاً، فالتاريخ العربي لم يعرف العداء لليهود، ولكن لماذا لم تتحقق هذه الإمكانية؟ لأن الصهيونية - بمساندة الأمبريالية هي التي تريد فلسطين بدون عرب، وهي لا تعترف، حتى مجرد اعتراف شكلي، بوجود الشعب العربي الفلسطيني". ومن رأيه في الشعر يقول: "أني أعتبر نفسي شاعراً ثورياً يخاطب الجماهير ويلتزم بقضية الجماهير ويكتب من أجل الجماهير ...".
يتألف كتاب "شيء عن الوطن/ الأعمال النثرية" من ثلاثة أقسام تحتوي على مقالات نثرية وكلمات وخطب وشهادات ومقابلات للشاعر محمود درويش نذكر من العناوين:" شيء عن الوطن" ، "هذا الإهتمام .. يهمنا" ، "بطاقة إلى وزير الدفاع" ، "لمن تقرع الأجراس" ، "رسالة ثانية إلى زنجي" ، "واقع الكاتب العربي في إسرائيل" ، "هكذا أعيش وأناضل في إسرائيل" ، "القضية وشعر القضية في حديث شخصي" ، (...) وعناوين أخرى.
