رحلة في التاريخ أم في الجغرافيا، أم هي خليط من كل ذلك مضاف إليها نكهة خاصة يضيفها الكاتب على موضوعاته ويجملها أسلوبه الفني الرائع. وطني السودان مختصر لكنه غني لتاريخ بلد وشعب يمثله الرجال الطيبون، الذين أهداهم المؤلف كتابه هذا. يرسم المؤلف لوحة، أي لوحة! فالانتماء، إلى هذا الوطن البعيد المنال كما يقول المؤلف أمر عسير "أن تنتمي إلى هذا الوطن البعيد المنال، ذلك أمر عسير. أن تكون سمعت زغاريد النساء في الأعراس، ورأيت انعكاسات الضوء على وجه النيل وقت الشروق ووقت الغروب". والكاتب يدين الظواهر السلبية في المجتمع السوداني إذ حيل بين عدد كبر من الرجال والنساء وبين خدمة وطنهم وهم في ذروة العمر. فهمناك ضباط في الجيش قتلوا، أو سجنوا، أو أحيلوا للتقاعد. واضطر عدد هائل من أساتذة الجامعات إلى الهجرة شرقاً وغرباً. والسبب في كل ذلك هو "الزعماء النجباء الأذكياء، الأغبياء الذين يتوهمون أن إرادة الله قد اختارتهم ليكتبوا الصيغة النهائية في سفر التكوين". وطني السودان يطرح هموم وطن شغف الجميع حباً به لأنهم وجدوا فيه وفي أهله ذلك الشيء النادر.
