اقترن اسم السودان، منذ قرون بعيدة، بذلك النطاق الواسع من الأرض؛ الذي يقع مباشرة جنوب مصر، وكان قدماء المصريين، يطلقون اسم (تاتسهو)، على المنطقة التي تقع جنوب مصر، ويعنون بهذا اللفظ بلاد السود، في حين ورد الاسم أثيوبيا، في كتاب (الإلياذة) مرتين، وفي (الأوديسا) ثلاث مرات؛ للدلالة على المنطقة ذاتها، وهو اسم مركب من لفظين، باللغة الإغريقية، وهما: ايتو aitho بمعنى المحروق، وأوبسيس opsis أي الوجه، وبذلك يصح اللفظ أثيوبيا Aethiopoa، باللغة الإغريقية، مرادف بلاد الوجوه المحروقة، أو البشرة البنية، أو السوداء.
وكان قدماء المؤرخين، العرب، قد ترجموا اللفظ الإغريقي أثيوبيا، إلا بلاد السودان، وتحت اسم السودان، جمع قدماء المؤرخين العرب، جميع الشعوب، القاطنة جنوب الصحراء الكبرى، مثل تكرور، وغانة، وضهاجة، وغيرهم.
أيضًا تعني بلاد السودان، بلاد الشجعان، وكان يستخدم بصفة عامة لكل بلاد الزنوج، وقد جاء في مقدمة "ابن خلدون" بأن كلمة "السودان" كلمة مرادفة للزنوج. وفي هذه البلاد ستكون رحلتنا مع هذا الكتاب، نتعرف إليها عن قرب.. عاداتها وتقاليدها وأساطيرها وتراثها.
