يناقش الكتاب فشل تجربة حكم الإسلاميين في السودان لمحاولتهم تطبيق نموذج فكري لا يستجيب لمتطلبات الواقع المجتمعية والسياسية والاقتصادية والثقافية، ومحاولتهم فرض هذا النموذج على المجتمع السوداني، يتكون الكتاب من سبعة فصول تتناول المشاكل التي تواجه المجتمع السوداني تحت حكم الإسلاميين، وتحديات الديمقراطية، وكيفية تعامل الإسلاميين مع حقوق الإنسان والتناقض الواضح بين إعلانهم الإيمان بحقوق الإنسان وممارستهم في تجربة الحكم. ويُلقي الكتاب الضوء على أهم الحقوق التي يتم انتهاكها في السودان مثل الحق في الحياة، والانتهاكات التي يتعرض لها السودانيون مثل الاختفاء القسري والإبادة الجماعية والتطهير العرقي والقتل خارج نطاق القانون والحق في المحاكمة العادلة، يخصص الكاتب فصلاً للحديث عن الدستور السوداني وكيفية تعامله مع حقوق الإنسان وبالأخص مشكلة التعددية الحزبية. كما يفرد فصلاً عن حرية المرأة والانتهاكات التي تتعرض لها النساء وكيفية التعامل مع الناشطات السودانيات والعقوبات التي تطبق على اللاتي يخالفن القانون العام والتي تصل إلى الجلد. ويخصص فصلاً آخر عن وضعية غير المسلمين في السودان يعرض فيه المشكلات الطائفية والمضايقات التي يتعرض لها غير المسلمين في السودان.
