في القصة المعنونة بـ أم سعد تقول: "خيمة عن خيمة تفرق!" يعكس الروائي صورة عن صمود المرأة الفلسطينية وتضحيتها بأعز ما تملك من أجل القضية. فعندما يقرر إبنها سعداً الإلتحاق بالفدائيين لا تقف في وجهه، بل تتركه ليلتحق بالفدائيين حتى أنها تتمنى أن ترافقه والفدائيين في خيمتهم لتعتني بهم "لماذا يا إلهي، يتعين على الأمهات أن يفقدن أبناءهن؟".
في الكتاب تسع لوحات / قصص أراد غسان كنفاني أن يرسم من خلالها الأفق الذي أشرق فيه الرجال والبنادق والذين – معاً – سيرسمون اللوحة الناقصة في هذه المجموعة.
عناوين القصص: 1- الصغير يستعير مرتينة خاله ويُشرّق إلى صفد، 2- الدكتور قاسم يتحدث لإيفا عن منصور الذي وصل إلى صفد، 3- أبو الحسن يقوّص على سيارة انكليزية، 4- الصغير وأبوه والمرتينة يذهبون إلى قلعة جدين، 5- الصغير يذهب إلى المخيم، 6- الصغير يكتشف أن المفتاح يشبه الفأس، 7- صديق سلمان يتعلم أشياء كثيرة في ليلة واحدة، 8- حامد يكفّ عن سماع قصص الأعمام، 9- ملاحظة: أم سعد تقول: "خيمة عن خيمة تفرق".
