تعتبر المواجهة بين آل سعود وآل رشيد من أقوى وأطول المواجهات التي حدثت بين القوى السياسية في التنافس على إقليم القصيم لضمه إلى حكمها، أو على الأقل إخضاعه لسلطتها، لما يمثّله الإقليم من أهم جغرافية طبيعية وإقتصادية تجارية وسياسية، إذ سعت هاتان القوّتان إلى السيطرة عليه، وتنافستا على ذلك، فعلى أرضه وقعت أولى تلك المواجهات وأغلبها، وكان لأهله دور كبير ومؤثّر في تلك المواجهات، فقد غيّر هذا الدور مسار الأحداث في الإقليم، وبالتالي الأوضاع السياسية السائدة فيه، والتي انعكست نتائجها على تاريخ البلاد بشكل عام.
وجاء هذا الكتاب لإبراز ذلك الدور الذي فاق به أهل الإقليم كثيراً مما قام به أهالي بقية أقاليم نجد الأخرى من أدوار في هذه الموجهة، والتي ابتدأت بعد تولّي الأمير محمد ابن عبد الله بن رشيد الحكم في حائل في عام 1289هـ / 1872م، واستمرّت حتى ضمّ الملك عبد العزيز حائل في عام 1340هـ / 1921م وقضائه على إمارة آل رشيد فيها.
وقد اعتمد الكتاب على العديد من الوثائق المحلية والعثمانية والبريطانية التي شكّلت عنصراً ذا أهمية في توثيق كثير من المعلومات والحوادث ذات العلاقة بموضوع الكتاب، بالإضافة إلى الروايات الشفهية لكثيرٍ من أفراد أُسر الإقليم التي كان لها دور في تلك المواجهة.
