لا يقع هذا الكتاب مباشرةً ضمن الأدبيات التـي تتناول ثنائيات العلمانية والدين، والدين والدولة الحديثة. فموضوعه الرئيس عن الكيفية التـي تشكّل ويتشكّل بها العلماني في سياقات زمانية ومكانية متباينة ومتشابكة في آن. يبدأ طلال أسد بحثه عن العلماني بطرح سؤال تحريضـي عما الذي يمكن أن تكون عليه أنثروبولوجيا العلماني. ومن هذا الأساس يستكشف الكتاب المفاهيم والممارسات والتشكّلات السياسية للعلمانية، بالتأكيد على التحوّلات التاريخية التـي شكّلت التوجهات والحساسيات العلمانية في الغرب والشرق الأوسط الحديثين.
وينتقل أسد من هذا البحث كي يفكك العديد من الافتراضات الشائعة حول العلماني والمساحات التـي يُدعى أنه يغطيها. ويجادل بأنه في الوقت الذي انشغل فيه علماء الأنثروبولوجيا بدراسة غرابة العالم غير الأوروبي، وما رأوه جوانب غير عقلانية في حياته الاجتماعية مثل الأسطورة والخرافة والتابوهات والدين، فإنهم لم ينتبهوا جيدًا إلى دراسة ماهية الحداثي والعلماني على نحو مماثل. كذلك يطرح أسد تساؤلات حول العلاقات الإشكالية بين العلماني والألم وحقوق الإنسان وتشكّل القومية والدولة الحديثة.
ويستخلص أسد من دراسة تلك القضايا أن العلماني لا يمكن أن ينظر إليه كنقيض أو كوريث للدين (الذي يعاد تشكيله كخطاب وممارسات من كل عصر لآخر)، كذلك لا يُمكن أن ينظر إليه كالوجه الآخر للعقلاني أو الرشيد. فإنما العلماني توصيف له تاريخ متعدد الطبقات ويضرب في الجذور إلى تشكّل الحداثة وما قبلها وما أنتجته من مفاهيم وممارسات يتقاطع بعضها مع الدينـي.
وعلى أساس هذا الافتراض، يحاول الفصل الأخير المطوّل في الكتاب عن إعادة تشكّل القانون والأخلاق في مصر في القرنين التاسع عشر والعشرين أن يقدّم نموذجًا لعمليات العلمنة كما بدت في ساحة تشكّل القانوني والأخلاقي في مصر الكولونيالية.
