كان علم الأنثروبولوجيا في الماضي يهتمُّ في المقام الأوّل بالمجتمعات "البدائية" وكان عالم الأنثروبولوجيا يذهب إلى تلك المجتمعات في مناطقها النائية، أمّا الآن فقد أخذ هؤلاء الأهالي يأتون إلى الغرب بأنفسهم، وصار الغرب نفسه موضوعاً للدراسة الأنثروبولوجية، وبذا توسَّعت الرقعة التي يتناولها علم الأنثروبولوجيا، وصار فعلاً علماً يتناول الإنسان في شتى مناطقه، ولا يحصر نفسه في عيِّنات متناثرة.
ويتناول هذا الكتاب أسباب القوة في كلٍّ من المسيحية والإسلام، وذلك بما يتَّصفان به من قدرة على التكيُّف على وفق الظروف المتغيِّرة في هذا العالم، والنظرة التي ينطلق منها المؤلِّف نظرةٌ علمانيةٌ تدرس الدين بوصفه ظاهرة تؤثِّر فيه ويؤثِّر فيها.
ومصطلحه الأساسي هو مصطلح الضَّبط، والضَّبط قد يأتي من الخارج (من الدولة أو من الكنيسة)، وقد يأتي من الداخل من طريق إلتزام ضوابط يؤمن بها الفرد أو تؤمن بها الجماعة.
ويتناول الكتاب موضوعات بالغة الأهمية كظاهرة الألم والإيلام للحصول على الحقيقة، وعلاقة الدين بالدولة، والأزمة التي أثارتها رواية الآيات الشيطانية لسلمان رشدي، كلّ ذلك بأسلوب علمي رصين من عالم أنثروبولوجي يُعدُّ الآن في طليعة العاملين في هذا الحقل في الولايات المتحدة.
