يَعمدُ هذا الكتاب على تجاوز الوقفة على النصوص، واستيضاح ماذا أخبرت عن الطائف إلى البحث عن الكائن الشعري الذي يتشكل من هذه النصوص؛ ليجد أن الشعراء والكُتَّاب جعلوا الطائف بؤرة مركزية تتصاعد إشعاعاتها في عالمهم الذي اقتنصوه بالتأمل والكتابة، ليصبح حضورًا لذات يبثونها لواعج الشوق، ويشكون لها كبد تغير السنون والأحوال، الأمر الذي استدعى البحث عن معالم هذا الكائن وأبعاده في الكينونة التي سمَّاها (شخصية الطائف الشعرية)؛ لتصبح هذه الشخصية معلمًا، يبحثُ عنه في تلاق بين المرويات، وتساؤل عن الخطاب الكامن خلف غرائبها، وكذلك فيما ليس من الشعر، في الكتابة التي يخالطها الشوق إلى الطائف، وتمتزج به في سرد الرواة، والمؤرخين، والكاتبين الساردين؛ لذلك لم يقصر هذا الاستنطاق في الديوان العمودي لشعر الطائف فقط لكي لايقلل من شأن قصيدة التفعيلة، أو قصيدة النثر، بل استدناه منهما، ومن كلّ مخالطة للطائف داخلت هذا الكائن، واستنطقته.
