هذه العبارة تختصر حياة زوجين هما سعد وزاهية قدر لهما أن يتزوجا إرضاء لرغبة الأهل والمجتمع، فعاشا حياة رتيبة ولم يرزقا بأطفال، وعندما انفصلا تحت رغبتهما معا، عرفا معنى أن يكون الإنسان حرا في اختياراته وأن يواجه الحياة بقوة إرادة وبشجاعة في مواجهة الأقدار. يقول سعد بطل الرواية " ها هي لحظة المواجهة قد حانت، وها هي كذباتي تخجلني الآن، تحاتصرني، يؤنبن ضميري، ولكن ماذا كان علي أن أفعل؟! لقد ضحيت بالكثير من حياتي ومن حريتي. لماذا تستكثر علي الدنيا أن أعيش حياتي بمنأى عن هذه القيود التي تكبلني، تكاد تحبس أنفاسي؟! كيف أرتشف من رحيق الحياة وأنا مشدود إلى هذا المكان؟! قيود ولدت معي، وأخرى خلقتها بنفسي، وأخرى يحيطني بها الناس الذين يفرضون علي كيف أعيش (...) وهكذا استطاع "الألمعي" أن يقدم عمل أدبي يحقق فيه الأدب وظيفته ودوره، ويفيد ويمتع ويقول، ويستحق القراءة.
ها هي لحظة المواجهة قد حانت، وها هي كذباتي تُخجلني الآن، تحاصرني، يؤنبني ضميري، ولكن ماذا عليّ أن أفعل؟!
لقد ضحيت بالكثير من حياتي ومن حريتي. لماذا تستكثر عليّ الدنيا أن أعيش حياتي بمنأى عن هذه القيود التي تكبّلني، تكاد تحبس أنفاسي؟! كيف أرتشف من رحيق الحياة وأنا مشدود إلى هذا المكان؟!
