الرواية مثيرة للجدل من نوعها حيث تتحدث عن تفاصيل يستغربها المجتمع العربي خصوصَا إن كانت علاقة حب بين فتاة و أبيها, كتب الروائي علي الشوك الصيغة الأولى لهذه الرواية وعرضها على صديقٍ له، صحافي ومثقف؛وصديقة كاتبة. فكان رأي الصديق إيجابياً بشأنها، ولم يجد غضاضة في الإشارات الواضحة إلى رغبة البطلة في التعري أمام أبيها، الذي تحبه أكثر من أي رجل آخر، بمن فيهم زوجها. وعذرها في ذلك أن الآخرين ليسوا أكثر قرباً إليها من أبيها. أما رأي الصديقة الكاتبة فكان أن التعري أمام الأب شيء غير مقبول، شيء صادم. نَصَحته بإعادة كتابة النص، لأسباب أخرى أيضاً، تقنية. فألغى النص بالمرة.لكنه عاد إلى الرواية التي ألغاها، ليكتبها من جديد، بلسان حال البطلة الجريحة، أو المنجرحة، لأنها تُمنع من حبها لأبيها. وهذا إشارة إلى حب البطلة شهرزاد لأبيها، المقيّد بالسلاسل. كلما التقى علي الشوك بأصدقائه يكون السؤال: ماذا تكتب الآن؟ ويكون الجواب: "أكتبُ نصًا روائيًا عن بنت تعشق أباها (رغم أنها متزوجة)، وأنا متردد حول نشرها، لأنني استشرتُ صديقةً كاتبة بشأن نشرها، فكان رأيها أنها يمكن أن تكون صادمة" فكان تعليق أحد الأصدقاء: «لماذا؟ أنا أعرف فتاة عشقت أباها، ثم التقت برجلٍ يشبه أباها إلى حد كبير، فتعلّقتْ به وتزوجته". فكان هذا الخبر هو مما شجّع على نشر الرواية,الجدير بالذكر أن الروائي والمفكر العراقي علي الشوك كاتب في صحيفة الحياة و مُقيم في لندن..
