هذا الكتاب هو تنويعات على كتاب "الأساطير العِبرية" لروبرت غريفز ورافائيل باتاي، الصادر في بريطانيا، إنّ ندرة المصادر العربية في مجال المعتقدات والتوراة تجعل من مساهمة على الشوك عملاً رائداً، لا في ميدان المعتقدات القديمة فحسب؛ بل كذلك في أسلوب إعداد الكتاب، حيث اعتمدَ مؤلَّف صدر باللغة الإنكليزية يُعتبرَ واحداً من أبرز المصادر في موضوعه، وقد تجاوز علي الشوك النصَّ المقتبَس بدراسات وإضافات من حيث الموضوع والمرحلة الزمنية ليجعل من الكتاب محطة فكرية جديدة.
إنّ كثيراً من المعتقدات الإسرائيلية لها جذور سومرية، وبابلية، وكنعانية، وإنّ الحدود بين الأساطير حسب المفهوم المتعارف عليه وبين المعتقدات الدينية اليهودية ستبدو واهية، وبالأخصّ إذا أدركنا أن معظم هذه المعتقدات نشأ من أساطير سابقة.
والكتاب، وإنّ ركّز على التوراة، إلاّ أنه يطرح ضمناً مسألة الميثولوجيا وعلاقتها بالمعتقدات الدينية عموماً.
