"حين يروي شهريار" هو التوأم الثاني لأول، صدر منذ مدة وجيزة، بعنوان "شهرزاد والكلام المباح". وفي العملين يستعير "سلمان زين الدين" التسمية من مأثور السرد العربي، ويطلقها تجوُّزاً على الروائيين الذين شكلت قراءاته لهم مادة الكتاب. يضم هذا الكتاب خمسين مقالة تتناول خمسين رواية كتبها خمسون روائياً عربياً شكلت قراءة الناقد الإبداعية والنوعية والمتحررة من إسار الزمن. ذلك أن كل مقال يقدم مادة نقدية معرفية مستقلة عن الآخر، وتتعلق برواية محددة وروائي معين. "حين يروي شهريار" يتناول مروحة واسعة من الموضوعات التي شغلت الرواية العربية خلال العقدين الأخيرين، ويضيء بعض الاتجاهات التي انتظمت هذه الرواية. وهي موضوعات تتراوح بين السياسي والتاريخي والاجتماعي والثقافي... قد تجتمع كلها أو جلها أو بعضها في الرواية الواحدة. هو الواقع بكل تجلياته وتعقيداته ينعكس في الرواية. وهي، في تعاطيها معه، إنما تسعى غالباً إلى تغييره، من خلال نقده وتعريته وتفكيكه. وبذلك، تمارس الكتابة فعلاً تغييرياً. وفي حالات نادرة، تكتفي الرواية بتصوير الواقع في محاولة لتكريسه، فتمارس الكتابة دوراً مرآتياً". وفي هذا العمل يختار "سلمان زين الدين" رواية واحدة لكل روائي، وتم توزيع المادة المختارة على معظم البلدان العربية، مع تغليب المادة المكتوبة حديثاً على سواها، وإعطاء الأولوية للأسماء المكرّسة على ما عداها... مع ترتيب المختارة وفق المعيار الهجائي انطلاقاً من الاسم الأول للروائي، وبهذا يكون قد تجنب الوقوع في فخ المفاضلة بين الأسماء ومعضلة التقديم والتأخير... ومن هذه الأسماء نذكر:

- بشير مفتي بين السيرة والتاريخ...
- تركي الحمد يرصد التحولات الاجتماعية...
- جمال ناجي يغلّب الطبع على التطبع.
- خالد زيادة والمقاربة الفنية للتاريخ...
- ربيع جابر يكتب تاريخ المدينة.
- زهدي الداوودي يرصد التحولات الكردية.
- غسان شبارو يقرع جرس الإنذار. إلى آخر ذلك من أعمال روائية شكلت بصمة للواقع العربي بكل تجلياته وتعقيداته، الأمر الذي انعكس في الرواية .
