عندما يصبح «الموتُ سلعةٌ رخيصةٌ»، لا بد أن تكون الحياة سلعة أغلى.. ولكن كيف يمكن الحفاظ عليها؟ بالمواجهة أم بالهجرة؟ والجواب أن الاختيار بين الأمرين كلاهما مرّ، ولكن على الإنسان الواقع تحت وطأة الحرب والحصار أن يختار؛ ولقد اختار أبطال القاص فهد السيّابي الهروب أو الهجرة في عرض البحر كردِّ فعل على المصادرة المتلاحقة للحياة في وطنهم؛ بيد أن طول الرحلة ومخاطرها، ستقذف بمن شاء لهم القدر (الموت) بالبحر، وستبقي على قيد (الحياة) من شاء لهم جلادوهم وتجار البشر الانتظار على أبواب أراضٍ هي على (حافة اللجوء). إذ أصبح الحصول على سمة لاجئ في بلاد الاغتراب على بشاعتها.. شرفٌ رفيع بالنسبة للإنسان العربي قد يدفع ثمنه من كرامته وربماعمره كاملاً...ذلك ما تُنبئنا به مختلف التشخيصات الإنسانية في هذه المجموعة القصصية والتي تحيلنا لمجمل المعاناة التي يعيشها إنسان العصر داخل بلدان الصراع أم خارجها، فكلاهما يوحيان بالوجود على حافة الحياة، ويثيران إحساساً مستمراً بالمأساة، والشعور بالاغتراب، واللاتواصل مع الآخر، لذلك اختار بطل قصة "الموتُ سلعةٌ رخيصةٌ" لنفسه النكوص إلى الذاكرة عندما فقد معنى العالم والوجود من حوله. "خطر لي: ألوذ إلى أقرب ذاكرة. فكرت "الفرار إلى ذكرى مبهجة، حاضرة سينسيني وقع ألمي الطارئ، الحارق". كنتُ عازماً – في قرارة نفسي – خداع جسدي. أنسيه، الألم برهاتٍ وجيزةٍ من الزمن، وبعد ذلك، لا يهمّ...". هذا التصادم بين ذاكرة الذات والمحيط، جاء على إيقاع الخوف من فقدان الحياة. "فوراً، أيقنت إنني على قيدِ خطوةٍ واحدة فقط من الموت. خطوةٌ، وأستحيل - بعدها – أشلاءً مفتتة تتراشفها مخلوقات المحيط الشرسة". بهذه الصور البالغة الإيحاء ومثيلاتها التي تستهدف التراسل مع المظاهر الواقعية الأشد فظاعة في عالم اليوم يكتب فهد السيّابي وهو يسائل الضمير البشري، ويحاسب القتلة روائياً على الأقل...يضم الكتاب ستة قصص قصيرة جاءت تحت العناوين الآتية: 1- دمى طازجة مجهّزة للبيع. 2- للموت وجهٌ آخر. 3- هويّاتٌ مشروخة. 4- عشرون عاماً من العزلة. 5- سلخٌ بخطى باردة. 6- الموتُ سلعةٌ رخيصةٌ.
