قبل أن يجد الكاتب فكرة قصة، يحاول أن يلتقط رائحة شيء ما. شيء يحاول صبغه بألوان حية، وشاعرية؛ وهذا ما يفعله الكاتب محمد الرياني في مجموعته القصصية المعنونة «خطوات تمنحني عطراً» بعد أن أضاف إلى الرائحة الصور والشخصيات والأحداث وبعض التفاصيل الدقيقة لتسهم جميعها في خلق المغزى الرئيسي للعمل. ومن خلال هذا المنظور الوظيفي يجتهد الكاتب الرياني لجعل القارئ يدخل في عملية إتمام لمعنى مومئ أو موحى به. وتلك إحدى رهانات الكتابة القصصية الحديثة عموماً والتي تجعل من القراءة عملية استباق للمعنى؛ المعنى الذي يتجاوز السرد المباشر إلى ما هو متوقع ويفعل ذلك الكاتب الرياني انطلاقاً من المؤشرات النصية التي يوفرها للقارئ مع كل نص قصصي وكان جدَّ موفَّقٍ في اختياره هذا. من عوالم القصة المعنونة «رائحة الفصفص» نقرأ: "نادتني عند الأصيل، كانت تجلس على سريرها والهواء يضرب على المكان من كل الجهات، أتيتُ ألتقط أنفاسي، عليّ ملابس اللهو في مدارج الصبا، جلستُ إلى جوارها، قالت لي: اغمض عينيك، كانت تخبئ شيئاً ما داخل قبضتها، قالت: افتح فمك، فتحته ببراءة كما يفعل الصغار، ألقتْ حبات الفصفص في حلقي، عرفته من رائحته، تغشتني فرحة عارمة، فرحة المفاجأة فأنا أحب هذه البذور المحمصة لدرجة أنني أتناولها مع قشرها أحياناً، فتحت بصري وهي تضحك، ضحكتُ وأنا أطمع في المزيد...". يضم الكتاب قصص قصيرة جاءت تحت العناوين الآتية: "القصر"، "قمرية"، "زيتُ السمسم"، "دُوار"، "وسْم"، "جوع"، "ملاعق"، "أوراق الذكريات"، "فرخان"، "السطح"، "إعلان"، "نقاء"، "جاردينيا"، "الجَمّالة"، "جمود"، "جنون"، (...) وعناوين أخرى.
