تحت عنوان "هَكَذَا يَمُوتُ العَالَم" يقدم الناقد والشاعر حسن الصلهبي (مختارات جديدة من قصائد ت. س. إليوت) نقلها إلى العربية وقدم لها بمقدمة موجزة تتضمن قراءة نقدية معمقة عن حياة الشاعر وأعماله وترجماته، لكي يلامس بها وجدان كل محبي الشعر العظيم ومحبي ت. س. أليوت.
في "مقدمة المؤلف" قدم حسن الصلهبي نظرة حول هموم الترجمة وغايتها حيث اعتبر أن الترجمة "تمازج وذوبان وخلق جديد وتفسير وتأويل ونقد وفي النهاية إعادة كتابة، فهي إذن إبداع جديد، وليس كأي إبداع، بل هي إبداع مقيد، تتحرك فيه روحان وتتحدان وتحلقان معا في فضاءات غير منتهية ومسافات حافلة بوهج اللحظة وحرارة المعنى، ليتفجر إحساس بعد ذلك لا يرتهن إلّا لكلمة واحدة نصفها يشير إلى الفتنة ونصفها الآخر يشير إلى الفتنة أيضا. وأزعم أني وضعت في هذا العمل كل روح "حسن الصلهبي" متمازجا ومتصالحا مع إليوت في أحيان، ومتضاربا ومتقاطعا معه في أحيان أخرى...".
أما عن قصائد الشاعر إليوت فاعتبر الصلهبي أن "لقصائد إليوت اللاهثة فضاءات الشظايا للدرجة التي تبديها وكأنها مجمعة من أجزاء لا تكاد تجتمع إلا قسرا، ذلك لأن الانتقال من مقطع لآخر يكون فظاً بشكل صارخ، وتظل مخيلة الشاعر تقفز من معنى لآخر حتى يستحوذ الغموض على الأشياء والأحياء التي يتحدث عنها، ثم تتلاشى قبل أن نراها أو ندركها. ويبقى مسرح القصيدة الحقيقي متماسكا ومتحداً في مخيلة الشاعر فقط. فقصائد إليوت تستبدل الواقع بمشاهد الخيال: تيار الوعي الذي تكون فيه كل فكرة قصة لشيء حقيقي، بينما تشكل الأفكار مجتمعة مزاجا واحدا يمثل وحدة موضوعية للقصيدة. شعر إليوت موارب ومخادع والوحدة الموضوعية لحالة الشاعر يمكن أن تستنتج فقط من عدة إشارات سردية: أحداث متعددة يمكن أن تتبلور معا لتشكل قصة موجزة ولقطات متكررة توحي بحكاية مشتركة. وفي الغالب فإن الأصوات في قصيدة إليوت تكون جميعها مدعومة بفضاء سردي ضمني...".
وأما (المختارات الشعرية) فقد تضمنت ترجمة للقصائد مع ذكر السنة والمصدر الذي نشرت فيه كل قصيدة والمناسبة التي قيلت فيها والشرح للعبارات الغامضة، والقصائد هي:
1- أغنية العاشق جي ألفرد برفروك. 2- مارينا. 3- ما قاله الرعد. 4- الفتاة الباكية. 5- الخاوون. 6- رحلة المجوس. 7- صورة امرأة. 8- المقدمات. 9- نشوة ليلة عاصفة. 10- (سويني) منتصبا. 11- صباحا في النافذة. 12- صحيفة بوستون المسائية. 13- هستريا. 14- السيد (أبوليناكس). 15- العمة (هيلن). 16- بنت العم (نانسي). 17- العيون الغارقة في الدموع. 18- كآبة. 19- أغنية. 20- الشيخوخة. 21- محادثة أنيقة.
