للمكان في العمل الروائي حضوره، وإذا ما تأملنا المكان الروائي في «السجن – 18» للروائي السعودي محمد بن مانع الشهري، وجدنا أنه هو الذي يمثل البعد المادي الواقعي للنص، وهو الفضاء الذي تجري فيه، لا عليه الحوادث، ومثلها تصوير الشخصيات الذي كان له أكبر الأثر في صياغة المبنى الحكائي للرواية، فالتفاعل بين المكان "سجن الأحداث"، والشخوص بما فيها الشخصية الرئيسية في العمل "نبيهاً" هو شيءٌ دائماً ومستمراً في الرواية، مع ما يعتوره من تغير في بعض المواقف التي سوف يكون لها تأثيراً كبيراً في سير الأحداث، والتي تجعلنا نفهم الأسرار العميقة للشخصية الروائية التي اختارها الروائي وما يريد توصيله إلى المتلقي.
وفي هذه الرواية، يتم التحاق الشاب "نبيه" بعد تخرجه من الجامعة بسجن للأحداث للعمل في "القسم الاجتماعي" وذلك تحت ضغط شديد من والده وبعد فشله في قصة حبّ ماتت قبل أن تولد، يترك نبيهاً قريته وعالمه الرومانسي وسكونه وخيالاته والجبل الشرقي ملهمه في الشعر والكتابة ويبدأ حياته الجديدة داخل سجن الأحداث، وهناك، يجد عالماً آخراً ينتظره لا يشبهه أبداً ما يلبث أن ينفصل عنه ويعود من حيث أتى إلى الجبل الشرقي مع ناره وأغانيه وسيل من خواطر وحكايات.
