يُعرف الوصف عادة بكونه ذلك النوع من الخطاب الذي ينصل على ما هو جغرافي أو مكاني أو شيئي أو مظهري أو فيزيونومي إلخ .. سواء أكان ينصب على الداخل أو الخارج. ويمكنه أن يحضر مجسداً في دليل منفرد أو مركب، أي في كلمة أو جملة أو متتالية من الجمل وتشكل هذه المتغيرات، وما يرتبط بها من وظائف، وهي جملة القضايا التي يبحثها الأستاذ الدكتور عبد اللطيف محفوظ في كتابه المعنون "وظيفة الوصف في الرواية" وهو عبارة عن بحث قدمه الكاتب لنيل شهادة استكمال الدروس، أُعد تحت إشراف الأستاذ محمد برادة ، يأتي في إطار راهنية الرؤية النقدية التي ما زالت فاعلة، وملهمة وقادرة على أثراء القراءة والنصوص والأسئلة.
في هذا الإطار يقدم الكاتب عمله في قسمين: القسم الأول بعنوان: وظيفة الوصف في الرواية، والقسم الثاني بعنوان: الوصف في رواية (مدام بوفاري). وعن طريقة الإشتغال في هذا العمل يقول الكاتب: "نحن من خلال القسم الأول من هذا الكتاب، سنحاول جهد الإمكان توضيح طبيعة الوصف، بعدّه محاكاة لما هو مرئي، وبكلمة أدق، بعده يقوم بترجمة ما هو مرئي، أي ما هو جامد، إلى لغة. ثم سنحاول الإجابة عن بعض اتهامات وادعاءات مبخسي أهمية الوصف، ثم سنحاول حصر مختلف الوظائف التي يؤديها الوصف من خلال العلاقة التي يقيمها مع السرد الروائي.
أما القسم الثاني – يتابع الكاتب – فسنخصصه لدراسة الوصف في رواية (مدام بوفاري) بعدّها الرواية التي أحدثت شبه قطيعة بين مرحلتين في الكتابة الروائية، بفضل اعتمادها على الوصف. ويركز هذا القسم على العناصر الدقيقة المشكلة للوصف (المادة، اللون، الضوء) وكيفية تحولها إلى شكل. ويميز في ذلك بين وصف الخارج / الطبيعة، ووصف الداخل / المكان، والأشياء. وفي هذا المستوى محاولة ربط الوصف، بعده العنصر المهيمن في كتابة رواية (مدام بوفاري)، بالخطاب الإجتماعي.
