قد يعلم الزعتر أنه منذ اليوم الذي استصحبه أبوه لكي يعرّفه إلى مغاور وادي الحنداج، بات حلمه الصغير بأن يصبح راعياً للماعز يمكن أن يتحقق، لكن الذي لم يعلمه أنه سيصبح حلماً لا يكبر ولا يزول ولا يُنسى، أدرك ذلك عندما أصيب بالذاكرة المفرطة التي منحته قدرة هائلة على الاستذكار وأمدته بطاقة قوية تجعل الشخص يتذكر كل تفاصيل حياتة بشكل فوتوغرافي، يستعيد تفاصيلها مدى الحياة، أحياناً يؤلمه بعضها ولكنه وقع في سردٍ لا يتوقف، لسائر الأحداث اليومية التي مرت بحياته وبمنتهى الدقة، حالة لم تولد معه بتاتاً، فقد تعرض لها في مرحلة من حياته وأدخلته في استنطاق حياة منسية، لم يكن يعرف أنها سترجع مع أرشيف الأحداث والصور المخزّنة في خلايا دماغه منذ الطفولة.
