هذه المقالات جزء من مشروعي النقدي الذي ابتدأ منذ 1971 عندما نشرت مع الناقد فاضل ثامر كتاباً مشتركاص هو "قصص عراقية معاصرة"، وقد كنت طوال هذه السنين متردداً بين أن أنشر مقالاتي عن القصة بعد أن ظهرت في مجلات وصحف، وبين أن ألغي المشروع كله باعتباره قد نشر. ولكني وجدت نفسي أميل إلى تجميع هذه المقالات في كتاب قد يكون فيه فائدة لقارئ يريد أن يتعرف على القصة وعلى الناقد معاً، لا سيما وأن مرحلتنا الحالية في النقد قد لا تبشر بخير كما يرى البعض بعد أن طغى عليها هاجس تجديد المنهج النقدي الذي يبدو أنه يعيش دوامة صراع المناهج، دون أن يسهم هذا التجديد في نهوض القصة أو الرواية، على العكس مما يحدث في الغرب حيث المنهج النقدي الجديد هو أداة لتطوير النتاج الإبداعي لا أداة تفسير وشرح فقط. لا يسير المنهج النقدي بمعزل عن تطور البنية الكلية لمؤسسات المجتمع: التعليمية والثقافية والإدارية والعمرانية والسياسية. أما عندنا في الشرق فكل شريحة تتطور لوحدها وحين لا تجد مجالاً لتطبيقاتها خارج ميدانها تنكفئ على نفسها وهذا ما يحصل للنقد الأدبي العربي الجديد الذي أغرم بالمناهج الحديثة وتطورت أدواته وفق سياقاتها دون أن تحقق تقدماً في النص الإبداعي. مقالاتي هذه جزء من مشروعي الذي يعالج القصص والروايات ضمن سياقها الفني والثقافي لا ضمن منهجية مفترضة. ويعني ذلك أن المادة المنهجية فيها تعتمد على تقديم النص بما يحيو وبما يقول وبما يؤول وهي طريقة دأبت عليها وقد لا تجد تفهماً لا سيما وأن الكثير من القراء يبحثون عن أدوات المنهج لا عن ما تقوله النصوص.
