غريب كان هذا الأمير المتحلي بالمناقب البورجوازية. عاش حتى آخر ايامه حياة اشبه بحياة الجندي في ثكنته: حياة بساطة وتقشف. ولكن هذا الجندي كان مخلصاً للشرعية الدستورية وحريصا على احترام المؤسسات. دخل في السياسة كما يدخل الإنسان في الدين. واعطى للرئاسة مكانة عالية. لم يسحر الجماهير، ربما، ولكن ارتباطه بقدر لبنان السياسي كان اشبه بزواج عاقل. في رهانة على بناء الدولة الحديثة، اخترع فؤاد شهاب المستقبل. وكان بيان عزوفه عن الترشيح عام 1970 وبمثابة وصيته السياسية، حين قال: ان مؤسساتنا لم تعد مؤهلة لتحقيق ما يحتاج اليه لتحقيق هذه الإصلاحات. "كان انسانا شريفا كل حياته وبقي انسانا شريفا حتى آخر يوم من حياته. لقد ذهب التاريخ مرتين للقاء بفؤاد شهاب، قبل أن يصبح جزءا من التاريخ وملكا لكل اللبنانيين."
