Troisieme chef de L'Etat de la Republique independante, le president Fouad Chehab acceda au pouvoir dans un climat de scissions internes qu'il reussit a colmater. Tranchant avec celui de son predecesseur, son mondat fut marque par une ouverture sur L'Egypte de Nasser et une neutralite entre les deux Grands. Convaincu de la necessite de reformes structurelles radicales pour renforcer l'unite nationale, mise a mal en 1958, il entama une oeuvre en profondeur destinee a placer le pays sur la voie du modernisme. Oeuvre de longue haleine qu'il laissera inachevee, elle sera quelque peu freinee par le coup d'Etat manque du PPS fin 1961 qui aura pour effet d'accentuer l'ingerence du militaire dans la vie politique du pays. En 328 pages illustrees, le present tome, quatrieme dans la serie du Memorial du Liban, expose l'histoire chronologique de ce mandat qui a toujours ses irreductibles detracteurs et ses inconditionnels partisants.
