كانت الشهابية فرصة فريدة لتحصين لبنان عن طريق تحديثه وتدعيم وحدته الوطنية لو أنها نجحت في استقطاب كل اللبنانيين وتركيز نفسها ديمقراطياً وشعبياً. كما يجوز القول بأنها ما كانت لتصمد حتى ولو نجحت في إيقاف تطور الأحداث الإقليمية التي كانت الدول الكبرى وإسرائيل تنفخ في نارها وتوجه شراراتها إلى لبنان.
غير أن نجاح أو فشل الشهابية وإنقاذ أو سقوط لبنان في مستنقعات الحرب الأهلية ومضاعفات الحروب الإقليمية لا يحول دون الاعتراف بحقيقة صارمة وهي أن فؤاد شهاب، هذا النبيل الآتي من الجندية أو هذا الجندي الارستقراطي الذي حكم لبنان، لم يكن إنساناً عادياً وأنه حاول خدمة وطنه بوحي ضميره وأخلاقه الحميدة وإيمانه بالله.
وأن الذين عرفوه عن كثب أحبوه واحترموه... وأن الذين لم يعرفوه أو لم يقدروه أو خاصموه ترحموا عليه بعد وفاته... إنه في النتيجة كان رئيساً مجهولاً... وإنساناً مظلوماً في رئاسته. وهذا الكتاب هو شهادة حق أو تبرير لموقف في الحياة يسجل فيه سالم الجسر أهم المنعطفات التي مرّت على مسيرة هذا الرئيس ابتداءً من المجابهة الأولى بين فؤاد شهاب وكميل شمعون، وثورة 1958 لماذا حدثت ومن أشعلها... مروراً باستقالة فؤاد شهاب سنة 1960 والانقلاب الفاشل الذي أدخل الجيش في السياسة... ووصولاً إلى الفرصة التاريخية التي أضاعها لبنان.
