Book Description
وُلِدَ غوستاف مايرينك في 19 كانون الثاني عام 1868 في فيينا كابن غير شرعي لوزير الدولة عن فورتنبرغ البارون كارل فون فارنبولر وممثّلة البلاط ماريا ماير.
التحق بمدرسة فيلهيم في ميونيخ ثم تابع دراسته الثانوية في هامبورغ وأنهاها في براغ، في عام 1898 أسَس مع ابن اخته كريستيان مورغنشتيرن مصرفاً في براغ، وسرعان ما جعله حضوره غريب الأطوار وقوة شخصيته وإهتمامه بسائر ميادين الغيبيات وهواياته غير المألوفة - كالمبارزة على سبيل المثال - محط إعجاب ومثار عداء في أوساط البوهيميين في براغ.
بين عامي 1901 و 1909 أصبح زميلاً في مجلة "سيمبليسيسموس" الساخرة، بعد صدور مجموعته القصصية الهجائية الناقدة للعصر بعنوان "البورجوازي الألماني الصغير فوندرهورن" أصدر في عام 1915 روايته "الغولم" التي أسّست لشهرته الأدبية، والتي تُعدّ مع روايته "الوجه الأخضر" الصادرة في عام 1916 من أكثر الروايات غرابةً في الأدب الألماني.
وفي أعماله اللاحقة كوّن مايرينك معرفته الإيزوتيرية، التي استقاها من مصادر أوروبية وآسيوية، وأقام إتصالات مع بنائين أحرار وطرق دينية شرقية، ومع روحانيين ومحضّري أرواح، وكان مطّلعاً خير إطلاع على ممارسات السحر الأسود، توفي مايرينك في 4 كانون الأول 1932 في شتارنبرغ في جنوب ألمانيا.
