موضوعُ هذا الكتابِ هو تفاصيلُ العلاقةِ الرّوحيّة والفِكْريّة الخاصّة التي نشأت بينَ الشّاعِرِ الصّوفيّ الكبير جلالِ الدّين الرّوميّ (604-672هـ ). ومُرْشِدِه شَمْس الدّين التَّبْريزيّ (582- 645هـ تقريباً). فقد كان جلالُ الدّين الرّوميّ فقيهاً حَنَفيّاً ذا شأنٍ في مدينة قُونِيةَ التّركيّة, التي كانت في عَصْر الرّجلَين عاصمةَ سلاجقة الرّوم, وكان يدرّسُ العلومَ الإسلاميّة الأساسيّة في عَصْره, عُلومَ القرآنِ والحديث
والمباحثِ المتّصِلة بها, وكان يتتلمذُ عليه عددٌ كبيرٌ مِن طُّلاّب العِلْم. لكنّه بعْدَ لقائه شَمْساً التَّبْريزيَّ عاش حالاً مِن تغّير طريقةِ التفكير والنّظر إلى الوجود, فنهَجَ نهجاً مختلفاً تماماً عن النّهج الذي ترسَّمه قبْلَ هذا اللّقاء. وأظهر ما جدّ في تفكيره وسُلوكه وحياته أنّه تعلّقَ بشَمْسٍ التَّبْريزيّ تعلّقاً مَلَك عليه أقطارَ نفسه, وتحوّلَ إلى شاعرٍ عارفٍ فاق ما أنتجَهُ من الشّعْر ما أنتجه أيُّ شاعِرٍ آخَر في العالَم.
ومثْلَما كان لِقاءُ شَمْسٍ إِيّاهُ متلفّعاً بغِلالةٍ من الإبهام, كان فِراقُه إيّاه أكثرَ غموضاً وإبهاماً.
وقد تحدّثَ كثيرون فيما مضى عن لِقاء الرَّجُلَين, وما زالت أقلامُ الكاتبينَ في الشّرق والغرب تتحدّثُ عن هذا الأمر, وعن الفضاءِ الفِكْريّ العميق والواسع الذي قدّمَه الرُّجُلانِ, وقد شَمِلَ ذلك العالَمَ كلَّه في العقود الأخيرة, على نحوٍ يكون فيه جلالُ الدّين الرّوميّ مَحَلَّ اهتمامٍ مُشترَكٍ في الثّقافة الإنسانيّة كلّها.
