ثمة فرضيات عديدة حول أصل مصطلح "الصوفية" وغالباً ما يعزي مؤلفو الصوفية هذه الكلمة (ايتيمولوجياً) إلى جذر النقاء والطهارة. وأما العلماء الأوروبيون الغربيون فيميلون حتى بداية القرن العشرين، إلى رأي مفاده أن الكلمة المعروفة "الصوفية" أصلها يوناني ومعناها "الحكمة". والرأي الشائع، في هذا السياق، هو وجهة النظر المعبر عنها من قبل مؤلفي القرون الوسطى المسلمين التي تفيد أن الكلمة مشتقة من "الصوف" لأن رداء الصوف السميك يعتبر منذ زمن بعيد، الصفة الملازمة للزاهد- الناسك المتصوف.
و من المحتمل أنهم كانوا يطلقون تسمية "الصوفي" منذ فترة بعيدة، على الرهبان والنساك والزهاد المسيحيين الجوالين في سورية وشمال الجزيرة العربية والذين كانوا ينتمون إلى طوائف مختلفة.
