رأيت أن الأمر محتاج إلى كتاب جامع كمعلمة تجمع بين تعريف الولاية وحقوقها ونعوت أهلها وتبين مع ذلك سيرهم الطيبة الطاهرة في حياتهم ومعارفهم الواسعة الغزيرة ومناهجهم القويمة الحكيمة ثم أفوالهم وتعاليمهم في مجمل حياتهم العاطرة الباهرة. على أني وإن كنت قد خصصت القول فيه عن أعلام الأولياء وخواصهم دون عمومهم فالعموم كثير، وكلهم أخيار. ولكن لا مشاحة في أن يكون لهم أئمة منهم وهم الذين عنينا بأخبارهم وأقوالهم وأحوالهم وأوطانهم وتراجم حياتهم حياتهم ليكونوا مثلاً وقدوة لسالكي طريق الله والمقبلين على حضرته عز وجل وسميته (جمهرة الأولياء وأعلام أهل التصوف) قاصداً بمعناه وفحواه مضمون قول الشاعر الحكيم: فتشبهوا إن لم تكونوا مثلهم، إن التشبه بالرجال فلاح.
وفي مثل هذا الوضع والكيفية التي هدفنا إليها غنية عن كثير من الطبقات المطولات واختصاراً للوقت الثمين وحداً من المبالغة في وصف الكرامات والإسهاب في الشطحات الأمر الذي قد يضيع على الطالب المجد حقيقة العلم بطريق الله ويضلل غير المجد في ذلك الطريق فضلاً عن تضييع الأدب في السلوك إليه ومعرفة السبيل القاصد إلى الحق من أقرب المناهج والله ولي التوفيق، وقد جعلته في جزءين- الجزء الأول في علوم الأولياء ومعارفهم ومواجيدهم ومواهبهم وأصول طريقتهم، والثاني: في ذكر أهل الرعيل الأول من الصحابة وأصحاب الصفة والتابعين وتابعي التابعين من الأولياء وأصحاب علم اليقين أو عينه أو حقه كالأقطاب والصديقين وبقية الأولياء الصالحين وأتباعهم من القرن الأول إلى القرن الرابع والخامس الهجري وهي عصور ازدهار التصوف الإسلامي الصحيح ثم من القرن الرابع إلى السابع ومنه إلى عصرنا الحاضر.
