ثمة فرضيات عديدة حول أصل مصطلح " الصوفية " وغالباً ما يعزي مؤلفو الصوفية هذه الكلمة ( ايتيمولوجياً ) إلى جذر النقاء والطهارة . وأما العلماء الأوروبيون الغربيون فيميلون حتى بداية القرن العشرين ، إلى رأي مفاده أن الكلمة المعروفة " الصوفية " أصلها يوناني ومعناها " الحكمة " . والرأي الشائع ، في هذا السياق ، هو وجهة النظر المعبر عنها من قبل مؤلفي القرون الوسطى المسلمين التي تفيد أن الكلمة مشتقة من " الصوف " لأن رداء الصوف السميك يعتبر منذ زمن بعيد ، الصفة الملازمة للزاهد – الناسك المتصوف .
ومن المحتمل أنهم كانوا يطلقون تسمية " الصوفي " منذ فترة بعيدة ، على الرهبان والنساك والزهاد المسيحيين الجوالين في سورية وشمال الجزيرة العربية والذين كانوا ينتمون إلى طوائف مختلفة .
